Cast Iron Cooking Grid Care Guide

This guide will show you everything you need to know about maintaining your cast iron cooking grids for long-lasting performance.

First Time Use

1. Wash Your Grids

  • Wash the cooking grids with mild dish soap and water.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry completely with a towel.
  • Never air-dry the grids and never use a dishwasher.

2. Season Your Grids

Apply Oil to the Grids
Coat both sides of the cast iron grids generously using a Broil King® oil mister or a silicone brush. Ensure every surface is evenly covered.

Use High-Smoke-Point Oils Only

  • Avocado Oil – 260°C / 500°F
  • Rice Bran Oil – 255°C / 500°F
  • Canola Oil – 204°C / 400°F

Do Not Use:

  • Salted fats such as margarine or butter
  • Non-stick cooking sprays (they burn off at low heat)

3. Light the Grill

  • Light your grill and set it to Medium/Low (400°F / 200°C).
  • Heat for 30 minutes to bake on the oil and create a non-stick protective layer.
  • Turn the grill off and allow the grids to cool.

Your grids are now seasoned and ready to use.

Before & After Every Cookout

Clean Your Grids

Stainless Steel Grill Brush

  • Brush the grids before and after each use.
  • Inspect the surface to ensure no broken bristles remain.

Wooden Grill Scraper

  • An effective alternative to steel brushes.
  • Use it to scrape food debris from the top and between the grids.

Season Lightly After Cleaning

Apply a thin, even coat of high-smoke-point oil to both sides using an oil mister or silicone brush.

Restoring Cast Iron Grids

  1. Remove any rust with a grill brush.
  2. Lift out the grids and wash with mild dish soap.
  3. Rinse with hot water and dry completely with a towel.
  4. Do not drip-dry and do not use a dishwasher.
  5. Return the grids to the grill and re-season following the first-time seasoning steps.

Storing Your Cast Iron Grids

If you will not be using your barbecue grill for an extended period:

  • Apply a light coat of oil to the grids.
  • Store them in a clean, dry place to prevent rust and moisture buildup.
